I have also used fabric dye, usually RIT, as a wood stain. I've done it on string instrument bodies and on pipes for small hand-cranked organs.
Thank you Susie and Steven - My first use of dye to stain a mountain dulcimer. I opted to mix my own using water rather than alcohol to allow more work-time. Lots of prep work but I was happy with the look and especially the sound.
