Thanks for your nice compliment! On this instrument, I opted not to add color to the soundboard, instead applying a bit of Boiled Linseed Oil and Shellac for the finish. I felt the contrast wasn't extreme between the reds and the yellows so I let the natural beauty of the wood show-off. The rest has a poly + shellac finish. It kind of looks like furniture LOL.
The sound is quite warm and the bass line strong, but it does have a nice crispness in the melody string. In the hands of a capable player I think you would get a much better sound from it than from mine! I will post a sound video soon, hoping it captures the fullness of tone it offers. Cheers.
That dulcimer looks incredibly beautiful, Bob. The dye adds a really lush tone. Is the top dyed too? The edge looks like it's not but offers a nice contrast to the sides and back.
I'm curious what it sounds like. I have a student model dulcimer made by David Lynch that's made of poplar ply. It has a lot of volume and a really bright pop, like a mandolin. I've always been curious how much of that pop was due to the ply and how much was the poplar.
