Hi Lisa,

I know exactly what you mean! Nick saidthe same thing about the guitart player when he saw the video clip - he doesn't like the switch in rhythm and chords that the "new" players are producing. It would be interesting to hear the fiddleplaying exactly the same but with banjo - maybe it is the guitar that is swinging the tune not the fiddle? It iscatching the fiddle thatI want to do on dulcimer - definately not interested in copying the guitar!!!!!!!!

Robin, I like that Tim/Riley video very much as well. Isn't it wonderful to see noter/dronal playing being brought to the fore again? I love it! Those two do it so well, what a fine duo combo.

As to the second video 'Rockbridge' with the fiddle young woman and guitar player- just my own take on it, but I really have to say I dislike what the guitar player is doing. I don't hear the 'celtic' thing you are hearing, I'm hearing a jazz/bluegrass thing (could be due to our different backgrounds). The fiddling is fine oldtime style and bowing rhythm. The guitar player is driving home his heavy-handed jazzy style timing. He likely doesn't realize that he is doing that- I imagine he thinks he is playing pure, powerful, and supportive OT guitar. But to me he is just turning it into some ego fusion thing. I kind of got the tip-off even before the fiddler started playing, from seeing him strutting his 'riffs' while she very patiently smiled and waited. I never enjoy it when we wind up playing in a session with a guitar player like this.

Hey Robin,

I loved that video of Tim Erikson and Riley Baugus. It was good to see Tim playing in noter drone

Riley Baugus was playing on stage and jamming at the small old time festival I was at this last weekend here in the UK He did a great concert on Friday and Saturday evenings with Ira Bernstein flatfooting. I missed Riley's teaching session because I was running a noter/drone class.

I have a couple of videos to post here - in many repects they are very noter/drone dulcimer related but don't have dulcimers in them! The first is Tommy Jarrell playing and singing Poor Ellen Smith. I would love to capture that rolling drone with the off-beat shuffle on noter drone dulcimer. The way he backs himself up whilst singing through playing a lower simplified melody reminds me of the way Jean Ritchie works with her dulcimer. Also I love the extra crooked half bar that appears just now and then. I'm going to have to catch this tune sometime and put it on my dulcimer. There was a fiddle teaching session this last weekend on Tommy Jarrell's bowing style - I'm not a fiddler but I did want to go to the session to see what I could learn about playing noter/drone dulcimer from it (unfortunately I missed that one as well due to workshop commitments - Oh well!)

The second video I have is typical of how young fiddlers are pushing the old tunes. It is difficult to explain but I hear lots of OT fiddlers, particularly the younger generations, moving the rhythm around and adding long stroke drones. They are sort of pushing a Celtic influence into old time. I'm not sure if the guitar is in droped d or what (actually I think it is in standard tuning) but the playing style is very similar to Celtic DADGAD in rhythm - not your typical OT guitar style at all. I like this transatlantic cross-over. From 'bluegrass' we got 'newgrass' and bands like Nickel Creek - and something similar is happening to old time. Again, I'm looking to catch this sound and feel on noter/drone dulcimer - but I'm not there yet on this one either !!!!!

I wish I had known about the dulcimer years ago. As a guitar player, I tried for years to figure out what odd open tuning Joni was using on those songs. When I finally "discovered" the dulcimer a few years ago I finally found the video above and it all made sense.

Do you think if I change my name from Dusty Turtle to Sunset Pig Joni will kiss me?

And, I love this one because the tune/playing is great but also because the location is a great backdrop - enjoy:

.3mm! I though you were talking SERIOUS separation like 4-6mm. Your wood/glue filler will do certainly do the job, we do that sort of thing all the time. I love the 'high silvery' sound of those older, smaller bodied dulcimers. I have a vintage one from the early 1960s that is like that. Enjoy your new sound.

This sounds strangely familiar. I bought an old-timey looking dulcimer offeBayabout a year ago, wooden pegs and display stand, and the whole works. It was really heavy, didn't sound very good, and had a split in the back like you're describing. It could not have been squeezed back together, because it seems that both halves were glued to the brace that way, which could be seen through the crack, going across the lower bout. I prevailed on the seller and got my money back. I showed that it was split, while they claimed it was in perfect condition in the ad; I finally convinced them to take it back based on misrepresenting the item. In fact it may have been made that way by mistake. I was happy to get my money back, less shipping. Another eBay lesson. I hope you have better luck, and that yours is easily repairable.

Try your padded bar clamp(s) across the back to gently see if the two pieces can be drawn together...

You could always get a length of thin marquetry backstrip from a guitar shop and surface glue it across the split

Does the separation stop at the brace? It may be difficult/impossible to pull it together without damaging something.

I used Epon for the few flyrods I made.

It looks like the glue released at the joint (got hot/wet maybe?). If that's true, the glue could be hide glue and repairing with hide glue should work.

This internal brace you speak of, is it across the gap in the back?

If so, are you sure it is glued right across, or maybe only fixed to one side?

IOW, can the bout be squeezed shut as you suggest.

Yes it's safe to tune and play. Yes it's repairable. Probably not a result of the wood drying. More likely the result of being dropped it on its back or someone pressing in on the back..

The way I'd fix it is:

1. run a line of masking tape along both edges of the split to keep excess glue off the surface.

2. Insert a popsicle stick or somethgn similar and pry up gently to expose the edges. Slather Titebond or similar glue on the edges.

3. Release the stick so the edges come back together again. Put a third strip of masking tape down the length, centered on the split, pressing down slightly as you go.

4. Make sure the new joint is flush. If necessary you can push up on the inside using a pencil or piece of dowel through the sound holes.

Pretty Saro

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

That's the fretting I play in an Ionian mode tuning. It's the same fretting pattern that Jean Ritchie plays tuned CGG

I fret the doh note on 3.

TAB Pretty Saro 1-5-5

0 3 1 0 3 4 5 4 3\0 1 0
Down in some lone valley, in a lonesome place
0 0 3 1 0 3 4 4 4 5 7 7 4
Where the wild birds do whistle and their notes do increase
4 5/7 7 8 4 3 3/4 5 0 1 0
Farewell pretty Saro, I'll bid you a-dieu
0 0 3 1 0 0 3 4 5\4 3 0 1 0
But I'll dream of pretty Saro wher-e-ver I go

Pretty Saro

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Vivian, Have you tried playing the tab you have on the middle string in DAd. Basically that's what Richard is doing. He's playing a slightly flat DAd tuning on the A string. You could try tuning just to DAA and playing on the melody line.

Jean Ritchie in her book (I looked her tune up) plays "Pretty Saro" in CGG which will put you an Ionian mode. The site that I gave you has TAB that looks like a Mixolydian tuning, but it is the same fret number that Jean Ritchie plays. If I was tuned CGc, I'd do as Richard has done and play the fretting I have on the middle string.

If you want the sound that Richard is doing, you have to loosen your strings just slightly. You don't really have to retune if you are in DAd just relax the strings an equal amount and your strings shouldn't buzz as you're not going down even a whole note.
