The old song Black Eyed Susan/Susie played on a 1916 John Mawhee dulcimer tuned AAA. I know the family says they were tuned GDD, but this one had all strings the same gauge, so I tuned it unison. A's sounded a little better than G's
Bob, Patty... since it's in your heads, y'all need to play it! JohnK... yes, it is the 6th one known: 3 in the family and 2 in museums and this one. I feel humbled to have it.
First: Special thanks to Kevin Messenger for restoring the Mawhee to playability.
Second: Thanks Patty for keeping after me to record this song. It fit really well on the Mawhee.
Lexie, forget the tab and try to play it by watching my noter. You should get the "feel" of the song more easily and you can use the tab for what you can't get.
Robin C, thank you. Means a lot to me. Working that counter melody was a little tough, however, I'm used to trying harmonies when playing with other dulcimer players. Most of them up here just play the melody so I try to do something different.
Richard, it's hard to believe anything I'd do is inspirational and I thank you. It kind of takes me back to another time too.
Geekling, yes, it's got quite the sound and traditional is a good word for it. Even tho' I don't use a noter all the time, I do like to use one sometimes.
Jim, Ken L, Ken B, Dusty, Lynn.... thank you very much. I hope to do other things with the Mawhee including some Ozark stuff.

Wow, what a treasure indeed Rob....such a bell like tone to it....it sounds like your old Mawhee has many more tunes it wants to sing....enjoy it!
Oh that'swonderful Rob! I love the way you play a counter melody with the noter while singing - that's not easy to do at all !!!! It was how Jean Ritchie would use the dulcimer.
That dulcimer is terrific - it is great to hearan old onebeing played.
Another dandy from a few years back........sometimes I forget what great videos are on this site.......
Absolutely love this!

Rob, same here as Bob. I've been humming this tune to myself for the last couple of days. You did great!!!
Rob, great tune. It's stuck in my head now.
That's a piece of history right there, and very well done! Thanks Rob!

Just inspirational Rob; great to see the 'old' Mawhee played in style and your singing told the story so well it took me to another time, thank you.

Thanks for posting that, Rob--great to hear that old instrument (and to hear your singing). Are you strumming with a collar stay?
What a treasure of an instrument! And that's some nice playing, too.
My, she is an old gal. But she still sings.. very nice, Rob
That sounds really good, Rob. That old Mawhee sings pretty nice.
Rob, Awesome!!! Thanks for finishing Black Eyed Susie. Makes a great start for my day. It's great seeing that old Mawhee sing
Thanks for sharing the Mawhee Rob. It has a very distinctive sounds.
Very fun song Rob and what a treasure of the Mawhee you have there.
Just found the tab to this song, one on my long list that I want to learn.
It is nice to recently hear an original and a replica Mawhee, thanks Rob.
Sounds good Rob.
