Hey JohnK, don,t take my word for that explaination being 'gospel', just one of the odds and sods I seem to have collected along the 'dulcimer way'. Since hearing it tho', I have used 'upside down' hearts, just a bit worried about some of the music I make, if you know what I mean, better safe than sorry, lol !!! I did see a Clifford Glen on Sunday that apeared to be hedging any bets, it had its top and bottom pairs of hearts set as 'one of each'
Phil, I have heard one or two explainations as to why hearts may be positioned one way or t'other. Being a simple sort of a bloke I like simple explainations , so the one I prefer to accept is that if the hearts are 'pointing up', when the dulcimer is hung on a wall (not best practice IMO)) all the music accumulated in the instrument ascends to heaven; when the hearts 'point down', the music goes 'somewhere else' !!!
Phil, Ken strummed it a bit. It appeared some of the strings were loose. I'm not sure why Ralph didn't tune it.
My main instrument has the two up, two down arrangement as well, often gets called the 'Four of Hearts'
I've also seen a four of diamonds, a six of circles and a two of clubs

Thanks for the explanation, JH...I've often wondered that myself.
