I use to paint very thin ,to keep the original sound of the material. I think any paints made for vehicles are as poison to musical instruments , because they damp the tone a lot.
Jim, the instructions recommend painting it as it would give some protection. You are right. It doesn't have to be painted. I thought I would paint the base color on it and let my daughter paint some designs but it looks like she might not do that. I'll have to try it myself but I can assure you there will be no possums
