Thank you Rick, things here not a great deal better, 'one step forward and two back' sort of thing ! I have'nt touched a dulcimer since late Dec. ! The thought that people like you still 'listen in' helps a lot !!! By the way, was tickled pink to see that you have been 'splashing the cash' , Kevin makes good stuff, all you need now is a decent noter of some sort, and you will be set right for playing at Cades Cove sometime soon ??? When can we expect a vid from you and your aquisition ?
Never fear, John Henry. I am sure that there are plenty of folks (like me) still listening/watching your vids! Hope all is well (getting better, at any rate)
Joseph, I should have mentioned in the previous post that should you have no success in your search for tab, contact me via a pers. mess. and I will try to get something to you !
Thank you joseph , comment much appreciated ! I have not been able to spend time on this site recently, so was pleased to find that some of my stuff is still listened to !!! As stated in the notes posted with the tune, I used Tab produced by a great guy named Rod, sadly no longer with us, as a basis for the vid, but I am sure that others will be able to direct you to some suitable and more easily sourced Tab ? As for its haunting quality, I am not a 'purist' in the way that I play the dulcimer, (it must drive those that are to distraction !!!) I am better at making 'em, and would say to you, if you have grasp of the basic tune, then 'lend it your particular touch', don't try to always duplicate what others have done (me, for instance !) sing it in your head as you play, and be happy with what comes out of the instrument. It will change/improve? each time you play it............. look forward to hearing you play it here sometime ?
I really do like your version. As others have noted, it is similar to Parting Glass. I had never been able to hear the resemblance until I heard your version. (Also similar to Maria Martin and the more recent Star of the County Down). Again, I really, really like your version.
Hello Robin, thanks for your comment, I had trouble making a decision on whether to play it on my baritone, or on the latest build, which in the end won. It was the very first tune I played on it, apart from playing it in after tuning. Remember those 'special occassion' parties we used to have ? Rod was always so enthusiastic about 'em !
best wishes
John

John, this is beautiful. Your play, your lovely instrument, your sharing of a tune included in Rod's book-- all special.
Thanks Bobby ! I repeat, it was great to hear you singing again, with no apparent shortage oF breath !

John Henry - you keep doing whatever it is you do. You're making lovely music and wonderful dulcimers.
John S - Thanks for the link, the way tunes spread and evolve has always interested me. The words so often change, but the tune remains. The start of 'Parting Glass' also reminds me of 'Just as the Tide was Flowing'. It wouldn't be the first time I've started out playing one and ended up playing the other.
Sorry all, I had completly overlooked the fact that FlintHill had posted an excellent version of Social Band in the Hymn and Worship section some time ago, as JohnS so rightly points out. This makes my reply to johnp even more stupid. as I seem to have posed his question to Ken at the time! It's me age, you know.

john p - You might like to know that Flint Hill started a discussion on 'Clamanda' in the Hymn and Worship Song Players group a while back. In it he posts a link to an mp3 of himself singing and playing it, and a link to a printout of the lyrics. As you say, it's clearly a version of the tune we usually associate with 'Parting Glass'.
Hello johnp ! Now you have got me worried, I have listened again, and yes, it could be a badly played 'Parting Glass' but is definately supposed to be 'Social Band', a Sacred Harp hymn from Rod's book to which he shows five verses, so maybe my presentation of the tune is bad on both counts and I need to go back to the drawing board ie, Rods music

Beautifully played John.
Does Rod give any words for this tune, I know it as a song of farewell and more than appropriate it seems to me.
"Goodnight - and joy be with you all".

Great song beautifully played. I love the DAC tuning on the Mountain Dulcimer.
I agree with John - very haunting tune and I like it very much. I hear echoes of "Star of the County Down" in there. Also - I have much respect for those of you who build your own instruments. I wish I could do it. I have lots of ideas, but little skill in that area. :)

A beautiful tune, John and a beautiful dulcimer as well. I am awed by your abilities as a player and a builder. Thank you for sharing with us.

Very haunting, and the vibrato adds greatly to the effect. This is good stuff.

Fantastic, John! Your best video yet, I think. And nobody, but nobody, can do noter vibrato like you can.
What a marvellous sounding dulcimer.
