Briefly, gapped means that the tune only uses some of the intervals available, this one uses the unison, maj2nd, maj3rd, perfect5th, maj6th and octave. i.e. it doesn't use the 4th or 7th intervals. This is often referred to as a pentatonic tune(only uses 5 notes). A consequence of this is that the tune can be played from three different positions on the fretboard, or three different modes, as determined by the fret the tune ends on.
Thank you very much Mike, good of you to comment ! (how did you manage to dig this one out , lol). It is a simple tune to play, and as you have observed, derives a lot from the strumming, which I must confess, probably does not fit any of the 'approved' patterns, I 'jus does it' !!! As Ken Hulme so rightly says 'below', it sounds great played on a regular dulcimer tuned in unision, (bagpipe tuning ?) really lets the drones feature.
Good to hear from you Ken, glad that you found the Boat Song pleasing

One of my favorite water/boat songs, John. Nice job. I play the version I picked up from The Corries, in Bagpipe tuning for even more humming drones... No Possums in Europe...

Ah.... C Ionian- just like Jean Ritchie's father Balis used to play in! Most excellent!
Thank you Lisa, it's a bit limited in range, and I'm still finding my way around it, but it is a lot of fun (you should hear Trials, Troubles, Tribulations, played on it, (my wife can when she is sat miles away, lol ) It has doubled melody strings, GG, which are fretted, then a one pair of drones tuned the same, and another pair tuned CC. Its just a tad lighter in weight than the TMB...........................!
Thank you folkfan, I am glad that you found it acceptable (I think you might enjoy an epinette! Don't you have a brother who works a bit of wood now and then? lol)
Forgot to say John, you can have the chair for a couple of days if you wish (you'll need to dust off the its feet if you intend posting a vid while sat in it), it's OK for me to appear a bit rough, but for a man of your undoubted breeding, well..............................!
Thanks Randy, this one is destined to be passed on to someone else, but tho' limited in range it might be, I shall be making again, lots of punch for such a small thing !
By George , I think he's got it at last !!!
First time I've ever done that !
Just type in epinette Mike ?

Hi Mike,
This is gapped at the 4th and 7th, so you can use any of the Lydiaan, Ionian, or Mixalydian tunnings,
john
John plays that in C Ionian - CGG. Any 1-5-5 tuning will work. Also sounds great in any Bagpipe tuning (1-8-8)
