John Henry, You asked if anyone has come across an extra long dulcimer. I don't know if one that is 39 1/2 inches qualifies, but I have one. My first instrument was a Bill Berg and has a VSL of 26 3/4". The head stock to the bridge is a 9 1/2" long scroll which by itself seems extra long.
I think the overall length is mis-quoted. Look at that chair. Figure 20 inches between the arms and 6" wide arms, and compare that to the VSL. That dulcimer might be 33" LOA with a 25" VSL, but it sure doesn't look nearly four feet long!
You've just jogged my memory Joe, I have a long teardrop by T.K. Francis. Much of the extra length is accounted for by having the nut placed a good 3" down the fretboard.
I was struck by the length of this one when you posted it earlier, I thought it must surely be a misprint and didn't comment.
Having seen the photo this still looks wrong. Allowing 5 or even 6 inches below the bridge this would make the headstock over a foot long !
Or to put it another way that's the distance from the nut to the 7th fret.
The longest one I have is the Bill Davis at 39 inches, 2" below the bridge, 28" VSL and a 9" headstock that wouldn't look out of place on a double bass

And Bobby, if I can get my next build to sound like your last (Pretty Polly!) I shall be well pleased !!!
John
I agree Ken ! Sorry for the highjack Tony, my fault, will butt out now !

Another possiblity of course is that the VSL may have been misprinted, and should be 28 1/2 say.
This would bring the proportions more into line with what you might expect.
