Lexie, it is fun to be able to make something that plays music. I used a pocket knife and a couple of files. I also used one of my daughters arrows just to make sure one end was hollow. Don't tell her I did that. She'll have a fit, LOL
There is a track or channel underneath the wood block (piece of wood attached by a rubber band) that allows the air blown in the upper end to travel to the hole which is not covered by the block. If the track is too deep then the flute will sound like blowing air. That's what happened to me.
I did make the track too deep. I glued some heavy paper in the track and I got a flute sound. I do get a high pitch sound especially after the second or third hole is covered but it does sound more like a flute instead of air. The high pitch sound may be due to the paper not quite being level. Well, this is a learning experience. I'm excited that it finally sounds like a flute. I will try again
I watched a few videos on Youtube. I think I may have made the track too deep. I'll try to fix that and see what happens. I do have another section of bamboo to try another. I don't want to give up...not yet
My attempt at making a Native American flute. I failed. Sounds like air blowing. There is a perceptible pitch but it's low volume. At least I learned a bit more about bamboo. If anyone has any suggestions feel free to comment. Thanks!

Great Patty, I hope that you can figure out the channel on your next attempt.
It is terrific that you made a flute.

What's the 'track'?

Impressive though! Did you follow some sort of instructions? I mean, surely you didn't try it without knowing anything about how?
Well at least it looks good, Patty. I can't help ya out.
