Dang Randy you make that look soooo easy. LOL I've tried the tab but can't get the hang of it yet I'll have to watch this another 100 times or so. But I'll enjoy it every time. Love the tune. Thanks for posting it.

Nice version of this song, which was the first tune I ever learned on the mandolin. Is that also you on the guitar accompaniment?I am no expert on modes, Flint is certainly correct. Am is the relative minor of C, and the notes of the chord (A, C, & E) are all found in the C major scale or Ionian mode.

This is an old favorite and I've never heard a clearer, prettier version.Agree with Keigh that it's Ionian. The melody as tabbed is Ionian, and every note of every chord is a note from the C Ionian scale:C: CEGG: GBDAm: ACE

Another great parlor dulcimer tune, Randy! You do it up good.

Nice one Randy. Very clean and the guitar really supports it.

As to the use of the Bflat chord to judge for myxolydian I can't really comment as I don't use chords. If the 7th note of the scale is indicated as being flatted in SMN I use a 1-5-8 tuning for my melody drone. If there is no flatted 7th note in a piece, I tend to play it in Ionian using my tabbing pattern.I don't even indicate chords in my tabs only 1 melody line note over the words of the song.I have Old Joe Clark sheet music that ends on 3, but I play it tuned 1-5-8 and use a subtract 3 to get my tab as every 7th note of the scale or 9th fret is marked with an accidental to flat the note.

I was taught to look at the key signature and how the song resolves as to how to decide on modes. A lot of folk music tends to modulate back and forth between the major and minor, but if the tune resolves in the major then I'd tend to play it in the major. What I do is use 3 for my do note and if the tune ends on 3 or 10 then I would automatically try it in Ionian and see if it sounds right. If it ends on a 1 or 8 then I tune CGBflat and go Aeolian, or a 4 and go Dorian. In your tab you have the repeat ending in the major and the whole tune resolving in the major and you have a 6+ in the section with Am as the chord which you wouldn't have tuned for the Aeolian mode as your C would be at 1 not 0.

Thx Keigh....I never knew what mode it was when a song went to the minor chord. For instance if a key of C song goes to a Bflat chord it's mix right? But if it goes to Am it's still Ionian huh? There's a few versions of Billy...here's the way I play it. Thx Bobby....fire me up Michael!... : )...

Randy, Great tune and if you're playing the same tune as given in Sessionshttp://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/5135 Then it's in the key of C ending on a C. There is some use of an Am chord, but the last four measures of the tune modulate from C to Am to G and end on C. Sounds like a C major or Ionian mode to me.

Here's another sheet music for Billy in the Lowground. It does sharp the D in the second to the last measure, but goes back to the natural in the final measure. Again in C and ending on C. http://www.musicnotes.com/sheetmusic/mtd.asp?ppn=MN0042558&mnuid=PS126RP6M3JM4SUDLSQCSS5BDVP6UM970JCKVLN7
