Ha! Robin got me to playing in 3 time the last few days with her Route 155 tune and I kept coming back to this one. I took a few liberties with the meter but it seemed to match the melody I was thinking about. Played on a fretless cigar box dulcimer.Tuned DGde key of G.
Welcome to FOTMD Susanne! Here's a tablature for Robin Thompson Waltz. I use a 4 string tuning DGde, key of G. I use a noter on all the strings. Measure 4 in the first part switches to 2/4 time (or 4/4 don't know which) and the 1st measure in 2nd part is 2/4 time also. 'X' is a rest. Hammer ons, pull offs and slides are indicated. Any ?? feel free to ask.
Somewhere earlier in this thread is a vid of RTW played on a chromatic fretted dulcimer using my fingers to fret the notes. It uses more notes, including the 4 & a half fret, but is probably easier to play.
Hope this helps...sure am glad you like the tune!....f'real....
That's sweet on banjo, Randy. Mark wants to learn the tune and play it on guitar and I think your banjo version may be the best version for him to learn from.
Since I was raised in a no dancing church, I can't dance worth a darn. Wish I could. This one would be tricky to dance to. lol
Oh, you'd have to do something way worse than come up with a tune nobody liked and hook my name to it for me to get mad at you. F'real. :)
No flies...that's funny JK! Sure glad you guys like the tune or Robin would be mad at me & I'd be embarrassed!
I like to play it...wouldn't want to dance to it tho... : )... here it is on a banjo....thx!
You are awesome. Love the tune!
Randy, that's awesome
Love your playin Randy
Oh I just love the way you play that fretless Randy. That's such a pretty tune, and wonderfully played. Absolutely beautiful
That chromatic version is really pretty and, as Dusty said, showcases the melody better. There's just something that grabs me when Randy's playing a tune with a noter across the strings, though. And though this might sound a little odd, the tapping of the noter on the fingerboard is one of the things that really draws me to Randy's fretless style of play. (I also like to hear some finger callous squeak from the strings when listening to a solo guitar.)
If I were thetype of guy who commented on the types of guys who play they types of dulcimers with four equidistant stringsandchromatic frets, I would offer thetype of words that say that's very pretty. It probably showcases the beauty of the melody better than the first version. But I'm the type of guy who really appreciates the unique sound ofa fretless cigar box dulcimer.
Love both, but I've always been a huge fan of your flatpickin' and this one's no exception.
Wow Randy...ain't no flies on the second edition either...great stuff!
Toss up here, Randy. Don't know which version I like better. I know, BOTH. Very nice.
Wow...that's beautiful man...I can't stop listening to this! Awesome job buddy!
If I was the type of guy who played a 4 string chromatic dulcimer this is the way I'd play the Robin Thompson Waltz. Thx for the engagement my friends...f'real....
Randy, very nice. Never ceases to amaze me what you can do with a noter.Fascinating!
I'm with Chuck. This one is my favorite. Selection, instrument, style ... it's all there in this one. It just moves along and holds my appreciation all the way through.
Randy - off all the songs I've heard you play (and I loved them all) this may be my favorite.
I love the slide-y liquid sound you get from this lovely humble instrument you made from cigar boxes, Randy.
Oh, Randy, thank you for this tune-- beautiful and has that nice Southern blues-y feel you get on fretless c'box. The lovely tune and your kind comments are about to make me cry. You have given me encouragement since I took up the thing we call mountain dulcimer and for that I'm eternally grateful!
On a side note, I considered calling the Route 155 Waltz the Lap Dulcimer Waltz as something of a joke but thought better of it; putting both lap and a type of dance in the title would've been just too racy. LOL
Some good sounds there Randy, like the others have said, got a restful quality, thanks for sharing
